Introduction

Founded over 100 years ago, Copag is a pioneer in the manufacture of playing cards in the Brazilian market and is now among the largest companies in the world operating in the segment.

In the beginning, when Albino Gonçalves founded Albino Gonçalves and Co., the company only imported decks, while manufacturing general stationery. Some years later, however, the company began to produce its own decks and adopted the trade name Companhia Paulista de Papéis e Artes Gráficas – Copag.

Much has changed since the old lithographic machines were used in the manufacture of playing cards at the start of the twentieth century and the company s factory in Manaus, inaugurated in 1987, now operates with the very latest in equipment. Determination, expertise, technology and, above all, a constant concern for the human aspect of the business, are part of daily life in Copag, a company that has continually excelled by maintaining its cutting-edge position.

In order to ensure it provides modernity, innovation and creativity in products and production methods, Copag employs a team of expert professionals to conduct focused market research. In 2005, this know-how led to the Cartamundi Group (world leader in the playing card segment) acquiring 50% of the company and further extending brand visibility.

I want to buy the book

The history of playing cards in Brazil is the story of Copag. (...) This is actually the great story of a company that began modestly – selling paper, notebooks and envelopes – and is now one of the most modern and competitive powerhouses in the world, fully equipped with the latest technology and prominently positioned in the international ranking of the sector.”

Ignácio de Loyola Brandão, in "Upcards on the table, or magic cards" (written especially for the book)
